Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
