Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
